Bangladesh won the toss and opted to field first, in a crucial Group A match of ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 at Headingley, Leeds. However, Australia injuries were the major talking point in pre-match discussions although it did give Bangladesh a chance to put runs on the board. The defending champions had been hit by the late withdrawal of two players, Phoebe Litchfield and Ash Gardner, who were forced to stay with their bigger squads.
Litchfield injured her quadricep in Australia Group A opener versus South Africa and is likely to be ruled out of a number of matches. Gardner, arguably the best allrounder in the world today, suffered an ankle sprain and was ruled out. Australia went into the tournament with confidence, however, given that they had an abundance of quality and depth at their disposal. Australia made two changes to the playing XI, bringing in Harris and Megan Schutt as they looked for a third successive win at the start of their campaign.
Bangladesh were aware that they would need a disciplined batting performance to put pressure on the tournament favorites. Nonetheless, within no time Australia found its rhythm with the ball and made scoring extremely difficult right from ball-one. Pace bowlers made good use of the conditions and fielders supported them up with energetic work in the FIELD. The task for Bangladesh was made harder through consistent pressure from Australia who bowled with accuracy and used clever fields.
Kim Garth gave Australia an early breakthrough and forced Bangladesh on the back foot from ball one. Her accurate line and length prevented the runs from flowing freely, building pressure on the batters to take some risks. Australian star Ellyse Perry played an instrumental role with the ball. She came in and punched at key junctures of the innings, ensuring Bangladesh was never able to settle into partnerships.
Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana tried to help her side through a tough period as the innings wore on. Several wickets fell at the other end and she remained determined, calm. But the Australian bowlers kept going. As soon as a few Bangladeshi batsmen looked like they could establish dominance with the bat, Australia managed to find ways to break partnerships and take control of proceedings.
The spin unit too contributed mostly in keeping the pressure on. Molineux opened the (T20)I series, and her captaincy was effective with the bowlers in tow. With Georgia Wareham coming into the fold, again there was more meticulous control throughout the middle overs as Ireland struggled to rotate or find boundaries. It was this pace and spin alliance that gave us a clearer perspective of not to forget the team balance – need more credit as a bowling attack from Australia, which proved why they are still one of Cricket heavy weights.
Perhaps one of the highlights in Australia’s performance was their adaptability despite missing key players. The unit has established a standard of creating good cricketers who can take the field in crucial games and perform well under pressure. The side was not greatly weakened by the absence of Gardner and Litchfield with their replacements showing an impressive level of confidence.
The match, however, marked yet another chance for Bangladesh to measure themselves against the very top level of opposition. The lesson would be painful at the moment, but could become invaluable should Pakistan go on to reach that distant grand-finale. Bangladesh are still working on becoming a more consistent international women’s cricketing side and games like these help in teaching plenty of valuable lessons.
Australia: Australia put their stamp down once again as realistic contenders in the race for the Women’s T20 World Cup, having last held this trophy high. Despite injuries hampering the squad in various positions, they maintained professionalism and quality along with depth across all departments. Managing the squad’s hopes of an 11th world title, there will now be a wait for news on whether either Litchfield or Gardner can play in Wednesday’s Test.
Australia are still one of the teams to beat as we head further in this tournament. The way they have continued to bounce back even after facing challenges is a huge statement ahead of their competitors. As for Bangladesh, they will try to take the positives and prepare themselves for their next matches in order.
