Australia have named a 12-member T20I squad for the upcoming series against Bangladesh and included India-born allrounder Nikhil Chaudhary. The 30-year-old takes the place of Travis Head, who has been rested following a heavy international schedule. Chaudhary, who could soon see international cricket for the first time representing Australia at this level.
Nikhil Chaudhary story A long road held with persistence, hard work and a golden opportunity. Chaudhary, who was born in India and played domestic cricket for Punjab before making his way through Australian domestic cricket to attract the attention of national selectors.
The Rise of International Fame: From Punjab Cricket to Australia
In Indian domestic cricket, Nikhil Chaudhary played for Punjab from 2017 to 2019 before making a name in the Australian established circuit. In that time, he featured in 14 matches for the state side which includes a total of A dozen T20 matches within the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and two List An matches within the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
However, continued support in the immensely competitive Indian domestic arena proved elusive for Chaudhary. But a 2020 tour to Australia derailed his cricketing career.
He returned to Queensland to stay with his uncle just as Covid-19 caused the rest of the world, including international borders in Australia and New Zealand, to close. Chaudhary stayed back in Australia, with travel restrictions still enforced and started doing coaching courses there based on the sport.
Building a Career in Australia
Born in India, Chaudhary initially settled after moving to Australia and began playing grade cricket in Brisbane. It didn’t take long for scouts to start calling after that, especially with former Hobart Hurricanes bowling coach James Hopes.
Spotting him as a possible damaging middle order batter and useful leg-spinner, the Hurricanes gave him an opportunity in the Big Bash League (BBL). That decision was a watershed moment.
Chaudhary has emerged as one of the most exciting allrounders in Australian domestic cricket over the last three seasons. The quick runs he scored and his part in the Hurricanes bowling line-up, made him a vital player.
Central Figure in Hurricanes Eyeing BBL Success
Chaudhary also had a pivotal role in the Hobart Hurricanes winning BBL title during 2024-25 Big Bash League season being one of major highlights for his Australian career.
His aggressive batting and match-winning performances in the tournament have been admired by cricket fans as well as selectors. His aggressive knock of 79 runs from just 38 balls, which included several boundaries and sixes in a stunning performance established his capability as an attacking player.
His reputation soared during the title-winning campaign and marked him heavily in Cricket Australia selection sights.
Success Beyond T20 Cricket

Chaudhary’s development as a player was not restricted to the T20 format. He has also cemented himself in Tasmania’s List A and first class squads.
The last domestic season Twenty20 saw him reaching two great milestones. This was his first century in Sheffield Shield cricket and also included his first five-wicket haul.
Those three performances proved that he is not just a T20 specialist by any means. He continued to accentuate his argument for national selection through all-round contributions across formats.
Eligibility to Represent Australia
Despite having been born in India and being a non-citizen at present (he is undergoing the naturalisation process), Chaudhary qualifies to play for Australia according to ICC regulations.
He meets the criteria to play international cricket representing Australia as he has lived in this country for over five years continuously. He is on a temporary visa valid to 2027.
His story is different because it shines a light on how, under the existing international eligibility rules of cricket, talent can be spread across nations and players should adjust themselves to changing circumstances.
Australia Selectors Impressed
Australia selector Tony Dodemaide said the national selection panel had been keeping a close eye on Chaudhary for some time.
“So he was a national interest player, & his views on Chaud where favourable + also noticed by selectors that he had already been listed as standby for the Bangladesh tour so no surprise there,” wrote Dodemaide. He also joined the Australian squad for pre-season camps in Brisbane, before flying to Pakistan with the team.
The BBL and Chaudhary’s general progress through domestic cricket impressed the selectors, Dodemaide said.
He also mentioned how Chaudhary learnt a lot under Delhi Capitals setup for the 2026 IPL season.
Chance to Make International Debut
Travis Head’s absence has given Chaudhary an opportunity to possibly play for his national team in the Bangladesh T20I series.
The coaching staff and selectors will see this as the perfect opportunity for him to learn about life on tour against international cricket, in his case competing with a teammate who scored 215 overnight for a spot in the XI.
Bangladesh has been a particularly spin-friendly territory for teams and Chaudhary’s leg-spin bubble, as an all-rounder both with bat and ball, could come in helpful.
Feats Very Few of an India Born Make While Introducing Themselves
Should Chaudhary debut, he will become one of only a handful of Australia representatives born in India.
Sellers, who turned 78 this week and lives in Melbourne, was the last India-born male cricketer to play for Australia when he played a Test match against England in Kolkata back in 1964.
She ruled the world with 12 other women, one of them being former Australian captain Lisa Sthalekar a Pune-born cricketer who played for Australia in 187 matches across formats making her country’s most successful female cricketer.
Changes To Fill In New Faces In Australia T20 Squad
Besides Chaudhary, the T20 squad for Australia series in Bangladesh comprises a mix of familiar and new faces Joel Davies, Tim David, Spencer Johnson, Josh Philippe and Aaron Hardie have all been added to the squad following their absence for the ODI matches.
Australia, meanwhile, are optimistic that captain Mitchell Marsh will be fit for the T20 series despite injuring his ankle. However, Marsh also batted in the nets in Dhaka recently and has made good progress.
